Call to Artists

PAPO 20083rd Annual Downtown Bellingham Plein Air Paint Out & Exhibit   This event is to raise public awareness about sustainable studio space for artists in the region, specifically downtown Bellingham, therefore we will be asking the plein air artists to set up easels around or near the Holly St corridor.  Because “Gentrification” is happening in all the art towns of the Northwest none are except from the problems facing their organic artists. We are making history! We are painting Downtown Bellingham!  Join artists from all over the area for the “3rd Annual Downtown Bellingham Plein Air Paint Out”, sponsored by Studio UFO and Blue Horse Gallery, both located at 301 W Holly St. in the Bay Street Village Building.  Bellingham affords us all the elements of a city on the cusp of great change.  From breathtaking water views, to parks inhabited by enormous fir and deciduous trees to interesting urban landscapes always bustling with many Bellinghamsters amidst old historic to modern buildings and landmarks.  Gentrification of Bellingham means higher property values which could mean that it will become harder for artists to remain sustainable in the downtown core, therefore we want to make our presence known and show how much we contribute to the quality and the richness of the downtown.  This plein air painting date is Saturday August 23, 2008 10am-3pm.  It all culminates in a huge art show at Blue Horse Gallery with an Artists Reception on Friday Nov 14 and runs through Nov 30.  Last year we had over 57 artists on the streets of Bellingham on one day and we are hoping for 100 this year!  The art exhibit is well advertised and a spectacular community effort.   Please save the date now and join us in August!  For your prospectus and entry form please email Trish Harding at trish.harding@studioufo.net or download prospectus & entry form at www.studioufo.net.  NEW THIS YEAR!  Those Plein Air Painters that, for any reason, cannot be present for the Paint Out on August 23rd, but can during the La Bella Strada Festival are encouraged and welcome to enter the 3rd Annual Downtown Bellingham Plein Air Paint Out and Exhibit.  They would merely use the plein air painting executed downtown during the La Bella Strada instead of or in addition to the Paint Out on Saturday August 23rd.   Painters would still have to register and pay the fee to be included into the Exhibit in November.

People’s Painting Update!

The diologue goes on!   The PEOPLE come one by one to paint on The People’s Painting.  The PEOPLE come day by day to paint on the People’s Painting.  The image changes minute by minute.  The messages are expressed one on top of another.  The visual diologue goes on!  The People are expressing their thoughts and producing organic, interactive, changing art that shows solidarity and different points of view; art that shows frustration and optomism; art that shows both sides of The People’s perspective.  Come by Studio UFO to add your message to The People’s Painting.  With many things coming up such as the 4th of July, election day etc… we DO have some things to by optimistic about.  That is, if we use our heads, celebrate and vote the way of light and not the way of incredible darkness that has prevailed for the last 8 years.

I saw Bobby Kennedy Jr. Speak to a full house in Bellingham yesterday about OUR water.   His message repeats the message of light in a very inspiring way.  That message that WE can change the direction of our fabulous country.  We can enforce the law with respect to large corporations that are breaking the law, exploiting and propagandaizing WE the people.  We CAN have clean water, wild animals, breathable air, and a vital healthly planet.  We CAN free ourselves from Fosil fuels without destroying our Economic stability (since that is just an illusion that we have economic stability in the first place).

These are optimistic times if we listen to people like Bobby Kennedy Jr. and others that tell truths and not lies.  Live and vote  for the light, for the right thing, for change,  for the love of your families, your friends, your planet.  The only way to awaken peace and let peace it live and grow in all of us.  THINK ABOUT IT…  LET GO OF FEAR!

Thank you for supporting Woodstock Farm

Woodstock Farm Conservancy Art Show 2008September 12, 13, & 14

The Woodstock Farm Conservancy has received its non-profit status and wishes to begin a new phase in the development of the city owned site, Woodstock Farm.  Evidence from the past confirms the active use of this very spot by native ancestors.  Looking to the future of this property as one of Bellingham’s public parks, we believe controlled and careful use of the site can begin at this time. The Event:Consequently, we propose to plan and produce an Art Show at Woodstock Farm opening the site to the public.  This will be an invitational art show for local artist where gallery-quality work will be offered for viewing and for sale. The venue for the Art Show will be the original Gates-Lee House at the end of the driveway into the site.  We may also use the barn to house some of the work in the show.  There will be no charge to view the art show.Guests will sign-in and be given a schedule of the day’s activities, a guide with a map of the park and other helpful information.  There will be a box for donations to the Conservancy at the registration table, along with a display that highlight the site’s current needs. The daylight basement of the main house will be set up for an ongoing presentation of the history of the site that is Woodstock Farm now, from prehistoric time to the present.  Included will be a display of photographs, maps and artifacts that will help describe this history.  The display will include information about the unique natural work that is Woodstock Farm-its plants, insects, birds, animals, etc.  Included will be the archeological discoveries made by WWU faculty and students during the past two years. To promote Woodstock Farm and the Art show, we will sell posters, and postcards.  These will have on them images from Woodstock Farm-original work created by local artists.  In the Gates-Lee House, we will have a pianist entertaining visitors throughout the day.  Guests will be free to explore the farm and hike the trails on the site.  We will encourage walking and bicycling onto the site.  In order to avoid parking at the site, we will need to run shuttle buses or vans from parking areas at Fairhaven Middle School, Fairhaven Park and Mountain Trail Head on Chuckanut Drive.  These will run continuously throughout the hours of the preview and the Art Show. Any funds earned as a result of this event will be donated to the Woodstock Farm Conservancy to be used as they see fit for the preservation, conservation and maintenance of the farm property

Michael Barnsley to give public lecture at WWU & Show at Studio UFO

Michael Barnsley to give public lecture at WWU & Art Exhibit at Studio UFO.  DON’T MISS THIS PUBLIC LECTURE AND ART EXHIBIT!

The Fractals of Lake Padden Michael Barnsley

Michael Barnsley will give a public lecture entitled The Fractals of Lake Padden at the Western Washington University at 7pm on July 16th. In addition, there will be an exhibition of his art at STUDIO UFO on July 18th.  Michael Barnsley has had a successful career in mathematics and business. He is a world leader in the development of fractal compression technology, and is the author of two major books, Fractals Everywhere published by Morgan Kauffman and SuperFractals published in 2007 by Cambridge University Press. He is featured in the Arthur C Clarke special The Colors of Infinity and the PBS Nova series The Strange New Science of Chaos.

In a recent review in Nature it is asserted that superfractals will revolutionize the way that art, mathematics, physics and biology are combined to produce a unified view of the complex world in which we live. Michael Barnsley will explain to a general audience what superfractals are and what they have to do with Lake Padden. He will demonstrate his new invention by means of which nature and mathematics may be fused to produce beautiful art.

Michael Barnsley has had a lifelong interest in the natural world:

All my life, everyday, nature calls my eyes to stare and stare with wonder; I have a sense of the pristine, the perfect which lives both in mathematics and in the visual observable world. My art tries to capture this, to see again, as though for the first time, the beauty of it all.

The processes he has employed to produce his art will intrigue visitors to Studio UFO but much will be explained during the lecture at Western Washington University. Michael Barnsley is a professor of mathematics at the Australian National University who divides his time between Australia and the US. Public Lecture – Western Washington UniversityScience Lecture Hall SL120, July 16th at 7pm Art Exhibition – STUDIO UFO 301 W. Holly Street, Bellingham, WA 98225 ,July 18th  from 6-8pmLight refreshments will be served.
