Double Triptych “Stitched” showing at the WECU in Fairhaven right now!

Hello friends!  Please take a minute to check out “Stitched” at the WECU in Fairhaven if you are in the neighborhood.  The venue is perfect for this particular piece and the lighting for artwork there is amazing.

Stitched (*The Double Triptych)                         $10,000

Oil on Canvas                                                                           6-3 foot x 4 foot panels

Trish Harding

Because I paint en Plein air and I am interested in downtown Bellingham and the vibrant arts community that is found here, I have been conceptualizing this idea for a double triptych for quite some time.

My challenge was to create a panoramic experience for the viewer to feel as though h/she could walk right into the painting and become part of it. I included many images that reflect our community using two different vantage points, the Waterfront Side and the Mountain Side.  The Waterfront side of Bellingham includes the trains, islands, birds, parks, sky and weather approaching from the South, water activities, our fishing and marine tradition and the Georgia Pacific Plant.  The Mountain side of Bellingham includes iconic downtown buildings, weather climbing up the foothills, Mt Baker, historical neighborhoods, trees, park fountains, vibrant street life and businesses, and if you look very hard you will find a flying saucer and a big foot making their cameo appearances just for fun!  You will notice also the shadows cast by the Liquid Light of the Northwest.

These images all depict Bellingham, whether they are portraits of stately old turn of the century homes or urban landscapes including what I call “the terrible beauty” of the Georgia Pacific Plant.  Bellingham gives us those and almost everything in between.  She sits on the cusp of great change with the cleanup of the GP Plant and the new and exciting changes that come with that.

As with all painting, the artist’s job is to paint the essence of the subject rather than simply what the subject looks like.  A further challenge was “how to put unreal linear perspective in use but make it work.  That is where the name of the piece came from, “Stitched” because I had to take a lot of perspective liberties, stitch them all together and make it read.

Pastel Class, Passages of Change, Trish Harding instructor

For more information www.creativeartscommunity.org or trish.harding@studioufo.net

Passages of Change

The objective in this five-day intensive pastel painting class is to successfully complete two or more major pastel paintings.  To accomplish this we will review value, learn how to see and utilize dark and light passages to produce simple thumbnail sketches, field studies, and concise and clear under-paintings

We will begin with a simple value system exercise, which will help us accurately see value and understand its importance.  We will cover how passages strengthen composition (how to arrange and design a painting, rather than copying a photograph), briefly review line as gesture, and pastel application and surface treatment.  We will be working on Kitty Wallis Paper with a variety of ground applications that will enable us to produce paintings that glow and glisten!

Since learning to see is basic to learning to paint we will be working from life.  Each artist is expected to bring one item (anything that has a personal meaning) to add to a still life for one painting and we will be working out doors en plein air for the second painting.

This is a perfect class for beginners as well as advanced and professional painters.  We will not only cover the fundamentals but we will also be looking for a new visual language.  Be prepared to work hard, stretch your artistic parameters, participate actively and to have many laughs to remember.
